Barb passed away peacefully at home at the age of 96. Many thanks to the staff at Bethany Villa for their compassion and kindness. Barbara Doris Lussier was born on September 30, 1927 to Alice and Albert Johnson in the Kelliher district. Barb was predeceased by her husband Rene, and her two sisters Dorothy and Daisy. Barb grew up in Porcupine Plain where they had a small one-bedroom house with the rooms separated by a curtain. All the girls slept in one bed and because Barb was the baby she always had to sleep in the middle. After finishing school, she started working in the hospital in Porcupine Plain where she received lab tech and x-ray training. Rene came in for lab tests and met Barb. They were married in 1953 in Hudson Bay, and were married for over 50 years. They lived in Weekes and Rene ran a locker plant until they moved to Saskatoon in 1959.
Barb had a young family when she went back to school for additional training as an ECG technologist. She worked at the Saskatoon Community Clinic for over 30 years as a lab and ECG technician. Barb was always very busy and active. She used to ride her bike to work at the clinic and would go out for walks at noon. They bought some land near Pike Lake, and she enjoyed horseback riding and walking in the countryside. Barb loved to see crocus and cactus and Saskatchewan lilies on her walks. When they retired they moved to Pike Lake and built a house and opened up a bed and breakfast. She had fond memories of meeting people from around the world who came to the B and B. After a triple bypass in her late 60’s, Barb and Rene began to exercise with the Cardiac Artery Rehabilitation Group (CARG) in Saskatoon. She continued this for many years, meeting many friends along the way.
Barb’s faith was important to her and remained strong throughout her life. Barb always enjoyed her family and friends, and volunteering. She was a member of the CWL at St. Mary’s Catholic church and a volunteer at Parkridge center and she would take her dog Tom for pet visits at Parkridge. She loved to learn and would take University courses for seniors on subjects of interest. In her later years Barb was involved with the Legion. Some of Barb’s favourite things were being a grandma and great-grandma and attending all the family events, whether it was sports or wiener roasts. She loved to travel and go camping. When her family was young they traveled the country each summer and she continued camping with family into her 90s.
Barb is survived by Glen, her partner of almost 15 years, her four daughters, Monique Gogol (Al, deceased), Debbie (Rick) Matheson, Connie Lussier, Claudette (Glenn) Lindsay, her grandchildren: Celeste and Alyson Gogol, Heather (Brett) Pennett, Kimberlee (Martin) Chavarria Matheson, Elise Matheson and Alex and Cameron Lindsay; and her five great-grandchildren: Elwood and Gus Pennett, Hannah and Marcus Chavarria Matheson, and Harlow Matheson.
Her funeral will be held on Monday May 6th at 9:30 am at the Bethany Manor Fellowship Centre, 110 La Ronge Road, Saskatoon.
