1960 Carol 2024

Carol Faye Mitchell

August 31, 1960 — September 24, 2024

Carol Faye Mitchell (NEE Chester) was born August 31st, 1960, in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, to Willard and Daisy Chester (NEE Phillips) at the Holy Family Hospital. Carol spent most of her childhood working with the family horses, helping take care of her younger brothers and the foster children her family took care of. Carol attended Queen Mary School and finished grade 8 before quitting and starting to work after that.

Carol met the love of her life James Mitchell, in 1980. They started dating August 31st, 1981, on mom’s birthday. James then popped the question December 4th, 1981, and they were engaged. On May 29th, 1982, they tied the knot in the Messiah Lutheran Church in Prince Albert. They settled in Prince Albert where they raised their three children, Sheldon, Cheryl, and Jimmy (James). Carol worked many different jobs in the service industry, cooking, and serving around Prince Albert, including almost 15 years at the Marlboro Hotel.

Carol worked hard both at work and at home studying to get her journeymen certificate for cooking receiving her certificate on March 17th, 1992. Carol started working as a casual and temporary employee for Correctional Service of Canada at Saskatchewan Penitentiary in 1994 in the kitchen. In order for Carol to get an indeterminant position at the penitentiary, Carol had to hit the books again and she was able to get her GED on March 17th, 1997. She then hit the books one more time and received her Red Seal for cooking on May 15th, 1998. Carol continued to work at Saskatchewan Penitentiary until she retired with almost 28 years of service in February 2022.

James and Carol bought their first property at Candle Lake in 1995, an empty lot next to her cousins and across the street from her big brother Fred, with plans to build a cabin. In 1997 plans changed and they bought their second property at Candle Lake, a mobile home next door to her big brother Fred. Carol and James enjoyed this place with their children, grandkids, and all their family and friends until 2007, when they started building their dream home on this property. Once Carol retired in 2022, they moved to Candle Lake and made the cabin their full-time home.

Carol and Jim enjoyed spending hours upon hours with their grandchildren from the cabin/beach time to sports or what ever activities they were involved in. Carol was a very proud grandma to say the least. Carol and Jim spent countless hours traveling the Candle Lake and area snowmobile trails. They loved taking cruises on their pontoon boat the Good Ship Wobbly Pop, enjoying the scenery, watching a movie on their portable DVD player, and even taking in the on-water concerts now and then.

Once they were both retired Carol and James made a memorable trip to BC to spend a month or so with all dad’s siblings and his aunt, as well as getting to have a great visit with her brother Fred and his wife Sandra. Last March mom crossed another one off her bucket list, when her and dad took a trip to Mexico with her brother-in-law John and his wife Gail. Both of these trips meant so much to mom as she had wanted to do them both for some time, she was even trying to plan another Mexico trip where all her kids and grandkids could join them.

Carol passed away peacefully in her sleep the early morning of September 24th, 2024, at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, with her daughter by her side.
