Eleanor Frances Berg (Nee Kirk) (Krischke)

January 28, 1925 — March 25, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend on March 25, 2023, at the age of 98 years.

Mom was born on the family farm near Aberdeen, Saskatchewan to William and Davidina Kirk. She attended Old Trail School and when she was 16 years old, she left the farm with $10 and moved to Saskatoon.

She worked at the eggplant and did housekeeping and nanny work. One night at a dance for the Military, she met the love of her life, George Krischke. They were married on June 17, 1943. Mom and Dad made their home in Portage la Prairie while dad was in the service and where their son, Larry, was born in 1944. They moved back to Saskatoon and into their home in Grey Place where their daughters were born; Lois in 1947 and Leann in 1952.

Mom remained in this home for 62 years. For many years Mom stayed home raising her family and keeping borders. Mom and Dad’s favorite activities were square, round and old-time dancing. Following George’s untimely death in 1963 at McGavins Bakery, McGavins started a Thrift Bakery Store for Mom to work at. Mom worked there for many years and fondly recalled many customers stopping to ask her if she was the lady from McGavins. Mom later worked at Sears as manager of the hardware department.

In 1979, Mom married Elmer Berg. Mom’s hobby was knitting and she made many beautiful baby christening gowns, shawls, and sweaters. Mom loved her holiday trips to Alaska and Mexico; to Scotland to visit relatives and to Holland for the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands; or just up to the cabin at Turtle Lake to be with family. Mom also loved family gatherings and hosted many of these fun occasions in her backyard.

Surviving Mom are her son Larry (Norma) Krischke; son-in law Jerry Keller and daughter Leann (Ron) Webb; her grandchildren Bill (Melanie) Krischke, Jeff (Danalee) Krischke, Deanne Keller (Jamie), Ryan Keller, Janelle (Alex) Inglis and her great grandchildren Carter and Gibson Krischke and Owen and Layla Keller. Mom is also survived by a special friend Audrey Boyd who was like a daughter phoning Mom every night to check up on her and also by many well loved nieces and nephews. Predeceasing Mom was her husband George Krischke, her daughter Lois Keller, her parents, her brothers and sister, Elmer Berg and many dear friends.

Mom had to cope with the problem of dementia for many years. She would brighten when talk was of her children and her grand and great children and hearing old Christian hymns, the Lord’s prayer or the 23rd Psalm.

In lieu of flowers, Mom would appreciate donations to the Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon. There will be no funeral service at mom’s request. A private graveside service for immediate family will take place where Mom will rest in peace alongside her loving husband, George.

Martens Warman Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the care of Eleanor Berg.
