Emily Moskal

June 28, 1936 — September 25, 2022

We are extremely saddened to announce the passing of Emily Elizabeth (Betty) Moskal, a precious sister, aunt cousin and friend, on September 25, 2022, at Extendicare/Preston, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Betty was born on June 28, 1936, in the hospital at Smeaton, SK. She was the third daughter born to Magnus and Jonasina Bjornson, joining sisters Margaret (Toni) and Ninna. The three had a happy and eventful childhood, and sixteen years the family welcomed one more daughter, Shelly.

After attending school in Smeaton, Betty attended what was called Normal School, to learn to be a teacher. She taught in small school, teaching Grades 1-8 in one room. After teaching for a while, she moved to Moose Jaw to pursue spiritual goals. It was there that she met Edward Moskal, and they were married on July 23, 1960. They spent almost 51 happy years together, as true friends and “sweeties”. Ed was a wonderful and valued addition to the family.

The first lived in Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan, where Ed started a career as secretary/treasurer for the School Unit. Betty was a teacher at the high school and was the first Home-Ec teacher there. It was a real learning experience for them, and they enjoyed their life and friends there so much. After some time, they wanted to spend more time on their spiritual goals, so entered the full time ministry work. They spent some years in the full-time ministry of Jehovah’s Witnesses, even spending three years as missionaries in Bolivia, South America, where they became fluent in Spanish.

When they returned to Canada, they settled in Estevan, SK, where Ed was the secretary/treasurer for the School Board, and Betty was a part time teacher/librarian. They were also Spanish interpreters in the community when needed. They spent many happy years in Estevan and made lifelong friends there.

Retirement took them to Regina, SK, where they lived until Ed’s death in 2011. They made so many wonderful friends there too. But Betty then moved to Saskatoon to be close to Shelly. They spent so much time together over the past 11 years, and Shelly treasured their relationship so much. As usual, Betty made many more friends in Saskatoon, with her warm personality and love of people.

She endured all her health issues with strength and grace and was not one to complain. She always looked for the positive and was such an example in that way. Her faith in Jehovah God, and the promises in His Word about life on a paradise earth sustained her. She regularly associated with her local congregation and was loved by all.

She is survived by her three sisters, Margaret (Toni) Gauzer and her husband Philip, Toni’s children, Kim, Allan and Krista and their families; Ninna Sparks and her sons Stephen and Douglas and their families; Shelly Stadnick and her husband George, and her children Carlene Szabo and her family, Jared Petch and Lacey Petch; as well as numerous other relatives.

We want to say a very heartfelt Thank You to the nursing staff and care aides and other staff at Extendicare/Preston for their wonderful care of Betty (or Emily, as she was known there. She decided she liked her given name and wanted to use it there!!). They all treated her so well as they cared for her needs. She truly cared for them and appreciated them.

A memorial service for Betty will be held via Zoom at a date and time to be arranged. Further information will be made available by the family.

Martens Warman Funeral Home is honored to care for Mrs. Moskal and her arrangements.
