Gilbert Alphonse Lafontaine, 79 years of Saskatoon, passed away on January 22, 2024, after a short battle with cancer. Gilbert was born on September 24, 1944, to Arthur and Dora Lafontaine (Gervais) in Batoche, Sk. Gilbert grew up in Prince Albert, and worked various construction jobs before starting an almost four decade long career at the Cory Potash Mine near Saskatoon where he retired in October of 2004.
Throughout his life, Gilbert was an avid hockey player. One of his many hockey highlights was travelling to the Aloha Cup in Hawaii for a National Old-Timer’s Hockey Championship. Gilbert later traded in his puck and stick for golf clubs and spent hundreds of hours at the Holiday Park Golf Course.
Gilbert was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Dora Lafontaine, brother, Ferdinand Lafontaine, and sister-in-law, Cheryl Lafontaine. He is survived by his son Corwin (Sho-Sho) Lafontaine and granddaughter, Sarah. Also surviving is his sister, Marlene Luchian, brothers Bob Lafontaine and John (Joanne) Lafontaine, sister-in-law, Rose Lafontaine, aunt, Angie Bernier, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will take place at St. Antoine de Padoue Roman Catholic Cemetery in Batoche, SK, at a later date.
