Janzen, Howard
September 16, 1952 - March 25, 2025
Howard’s spirit burned ever so brightly. Everything he did, he did with energy and passion, caring that it was done right - whether it was his beautiful, weed-free lawn, playing slo-pitch, singing in the car, or his work as an accountant. It all mattered dearly to him.
But it was his family that mattered most to him, even more than his own ambitions. Early in his career, he moved back to Saskatchewan to take over his father’s business. That choice made it possible for him to care for his parents in their later years. But more than that, his choice shaped his daughters’ early years, allowing them to know their grandparents, living just a few short blocks away.
Howard was known for his wit and sense of humour, tossing out groaners at the dinner table and puns at every opportunity. That love of wordplay was a sign of a deeper love for learning. Of all his accomplishments, he was perhaps most proud of graduating from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Commerce with Distinction and achieving his Certified General Accountant designation, later being awarded his Fellow of the Certified General Accountants’ Association of Canada.
Howard was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Elma Janzen, as well as his beloved sister, Dolores, and his brother, Douglas. Howard leaves behind his wife Carol Janzen of 47 years, his three daughters, Tracy (Trent), Janet (Oleg), and Amy (Hugh), his siblings: Eleanore (Ron), Reginald (Diane), Muriel (Don), Douglas’ wife Rita, Phyllis (Scott), and Leslie (Cindy), their families, many other relatives, and friends.
In his last years, Howard struggled with advanced frontotemporal dementia, eventually losing his ability to take joy from the most simple of pleasures. If you know someone with dementia or a caregiver, Howard’s family encourages you to reach out with any help you can provide.
Many thanks go out to all the amazing staff at Parkridge Centre, who went above and beyond to care for him during his most difficult times. A special warm thanks goes to Dale Holaday, who was the most loyal of friends to Howard, taking time for him even in his later years.
A memorial service will be held at a future date this spring.
