Joan, a beloved mother and sister, has died. Joan was a complicated and unique woman with a big laugh and an even bigger heart. She had a huge family who she loved very much. Born in Cudworth, SK, she was the first of 14 children to parents Olga and Kalman ‘Charlie’ Megyesi. She grew up on a farm with horses, pigs, and a huge vegetable garden. She traveled to school and church by horse and caboose with wheels in the summer and skis in the winter. After graduating high school, Joan had a set of twin boys. She felt the twins would be best cared for by an older couple with more resources, so she put them up for adoption. The boys ended up with a lovely family in Conquest, just minutes from the town where she would meet her first husband.
Still a young girl of 19, Joan set out to BC to spend some time with her Grandma Sophie and Grandpa Harry. Unfortunately, she got incredibly homesick and returned to Saskatchewan within a year. Once she returned, Joan got a job with SaskTel. Her first job with them was as an operator in Outlook, connecting callers and setting up party lines. Here is where she met Richard ‘Tim’ Davies who she started dating. Soon they moved to Saskatoon and got married. In May of 1978, Joan gave birth to her daughter, Amanda. Three years later, Tim ended up taking a transfer to Regina, so they picked up and moved south. This is where Joan remained, from 1981 to 2024.
Joan enjoyed living in Regina even though her family wished she were closer. Joan got separated and eventually divorced in the late 80s while Amanda split her time between each parent. Joan remained busy with Prairie Gold, a Sweet Adelines competitive barbershop choir, as a lead. Her renewed commitment to Christianity also kept her busy, becoming a member of Good Sheperd Lutheran Church for many years followed by membership with Harvest City Church. Joan continued working in Sasktel in various positions until 2006. Joan retired with 29 years of service. She continued to work, however, taking part-time jobs such as a sales clerk at clothing stores and cleaning for seniors.
A particularly special event for Joan was her reunification with the twin boys. In 2009, Joan contacted the Ministry of Social Services who then connected her with Todd. Eventually, Joan, Amanda, Todd, and Trevor met up in Edmonton where both twins lived at the time. All Four remained in occasional contact over the years. Joan loved hearing about the twins’ kids and texting about hockey.
In 2015, Joan met Eric Auger on a Christian dating site and fell in love. They got married in 2017 and were able to spend 4 years together. Eric died in 2021 from complications due to diabetes. Joan had trouble coping with Eric’s death but was able to get back on her feet after moving to a 55+ building in Regina. She remained there until she was finally ready to move back to Saskatoon to be closer to family. She only spent 4 months in Saskatoon at Luther Place before she died, but she was very happy going up for dinner, going to exercise class and hymn sing on Sunday nights. Most of all, she was happy to be able to spend more time with her family.
Joan is predeceased by her father Kalman ‘Charlie’ Megyesi, mother Olga (nee Shmyr), brother Russell and nephew Mark. Joan is survived by her daughter Amanda; sisters Edie, Cheryl (Bill), Karen, Brenda and Coralee (Jonathan); brothers Jerry, Randy (Rubina), Matthew, Kevin (Joe), Keith (Jacquie), Reg (Taralyn) and Jeff (Holly); and sons Todd & Trevor (Angie). Joan is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who she loved to laugh with.
Martens Warman Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with Joan Auger's care and arrangements.
