John Kurylyk

May 31, 1931 — March 8, 2023

It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of John Kurylyk.

He was hospitalized on Sunday, February 25th after a fall. They discovered a brain tumour and he had a short stay in Palliative Care at St. Paul’s Hospital. Thanks to all the staff that took amazing care of him.

He leaves to mourn his wife Mary (Wolfe), daughter Laurie(Corny) Peters – Carrie(Marlen) Janzen, Lexie & Lincoln, Brandon (Aimie) Peters, Liam & Rylee, daughter Doreen Kurylyk – Alisha (Chris) Burton, Mariah(Tanner) Sealyk – Jameson, son Dale(Yewon) Kurylyk –
Dana Kurylyk & Dani Kurylyk.

John was born in Birch Hills, SK as the oldest of 14 kids. Later he moved to Saskatoon where he met his wife Mary at the bowling alley, shortly thereafter started a family. He had three wonderful children, 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

In John’s single years he traveled around with his bowling team competing in many tournaments. The most notable one is his trip to Chicago that he loved to tell people about. Mom and Dad’s honeymoon was even spent going to a bowling tournament.

John worked at the Star-Phoenix and retired after 43 years. He loved going to work and was so proud of his job and took great pride in it. He was so proud that he had almost never called in sick. After retirement he started his second “job”, volunteering at the thrift store in Warman. Cutting jeans for the jean quilts that were made to be sold was the highlight of every day. Thanks to the employees and volunteers that worked with him and made every day his best day. As he would always tell us. “It was a calling” in which he worked faithfully for 30 years.

Family holidays are something we as kids have forever in our minds. We looked forward to dad’s summer holidays because we always went somewhere fun. He loved taking us on road trips as much as we loved going on them.

He was a caring & patient husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who loved to joke and play around.

He is predeceased by his Mom & Dad, four siblings, and great-grand daughter Cora
