Luella Bergen

June 29, 1946 — December 3, 2024

Luella Bergen, born in Rosthern to Abram and Sarah Zacharias on June 29, 1946, passed away peacefully in Saskatoon on December 3, 2024, with her beloved husband, Walter, at her side. Luella was a faithful and deeply committed wife and best friend to Walter, a loving mother to Jeff (Lara) and Janis, a proud Grandma to Ethan, Aidan, Rachel, Taliah, and Katrina, a devoted godmother to Nicholas Schock, a kind and thoughtful sister to John (Marie), Marge (Ivan), Florence (Pete), and Agnes (George), a sweet sister-in-law to Doris and Cornie, Thelma and John, Verna and George, Phil and Judy, and a caring aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Luella studied at several universities and received her Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Regina. She specialized in speech and language, and her students knew her as a dedicated and creative teacher.

Luella was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 1991 at the age of 45. When she was diagnosed, she was determined that Parkinson's wouldn't control her life, and she fought with resilience, grace, and courage for 33 years. Her faith in God was an anchor to her and provided comfort and hope. Luella did everything in her power to stay healthy and strong; her joy and gratitude were remarkable, and her focus on caring for others never wavered.

Luella took special joy in quilting, scrapbooking, baking, and cooking. She spent her last 3 years living in care homes, where she quickly made friends and found ways to alleviate pain, suffering, and loneliness in the people around her. If you visited her, you likely played Upwords, Scrabble, or Racko with her.

The funeral service for Luella will be held Friday, December 6th, 2024, at Cornerstone Church, 315 Lenore Drive, Saskatoon, at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Parkinson Canada Research Program (parkinson.ca) or to the Mennonite Central Committee (mcc.org). If you are unable to attend Luella's Funeral Service, please click the following link provided by Cornerstone Church, for the live stream: https://www.youtube.com/live/OHeM2t_IPV4.

Martens Warman Funeral Home is honoured to be entrusted with Luella's care.
