It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Merle Moir Archibald, 76, who passed away peacefully on July 23, 2023.Merle was born on January 26, 1947 in Saskatoon, SK to George and Mabel Archibald, the third of six children. When he was 19 he met his sweetheart, Darlene, and they married shortly after in January 1968. In 1970 they welcomed their daughter, Jackie, and in 1972 they welcomed their son, Butch. Much later on, they welcomed Benny (who fondly calls them “Grandma & Grandpa”) as a permanent part of the family. Together they share 9 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren and in their 55 years together, they also cared for 60 foster children.
During his adult life, Merle worked as a truck driver for Motor Ways in Regina and later in the coal mines near Sparwood, BC. He was a self taught handy-man and always had a project of some sort during his days off. Merle included his children in every aspect of his life, whether it was riding with him in the truck or holding a board during a renovation project and made sure to attend every hockey game he could!
He spent many years working as a sponsor through AA and had a soft spot for helping anyone in need. Merle was a very generous man with everything he had; often saying “you can’t take it with you when you go, so you might as well share it!”. He was also the life of every party and couldn’t resist a good tease every chance he got!
Merle was predeceased by his parents, George and Mabel Archibald and his brother Edward Archibald and has left behind his wife and best friend, Darlene; his siblings, Floyd, Sharon, Eleanor, and Donald (Sandra); his children, Jackie (Steve), Butch (Courtney), and Benjamin (Kjersti); his grandchildren, Kimberli (Jon), Jeremiah (Tara), Kara, Stephanie (Jeff), Evan, Gavrielle, Tristan, Levi, and Evelyn and 10 great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at Westside Pentacostal Church, 3488 Fairlight Drive, in Saskatoon on July 29, 2023 at 1:00pm. Should you choose, flowers may be sent to Cherished Memories Funeral Home, 591 Centennial Drive N., Martensville.
