It is with great sadness that the family of Phyllis Sawatsky (Surkan) announces her passing after a brief stay at the St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon on May 29, 2021 at the age of 84.
Phyllis will be lovingly remembered by her son Robert, granddaughter Ava, her daughter Shelley and nephew Chad (Lisa). Phyllis was predeceased by her father and mother William and Mary (Hupka) Surkan and her brother Russell.
On December 10, 1936 Phyllis was born on the family farm north of Insinger, Saskatchewan. She attended elementary and high school in Insinger. Phyllis grew up helping her parents care for the livestock on the farm; assisting her mother with the gardening, canning, baking, cooking and sewing. She worked with her father in the fields, helping him with the many farmyard chores and she loved to drive the family tractor. Phyllis began her career in Saskatoon studying at the Saskatoon Business College. Upon graduating she was employed by Burns Foods during which time Phyllis met her future husband, Pete.
Phyllis and Pete were married in Saskatoon July 25, 1959. Phyllis was well known for the caring of others, her canning of fresh produce, delicious baking and gourmet meals. Her specialties were Ukrainian and German cuisines which she perfected receiving recognition and praise from everyone as well as Phyllis received numerous requests for her famous, fantastic and tasty recipes. She loved gardening and spent hours in her garden growing her own produce. She was also known for kindness towards animals and helped many homeless and needy souls; especially, her comforting cuddly and furry friend Sammie.
Cremation has taken place. Due to COVID restrictions, the Internment will take place at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Martens Warman Funeral Home.
