Richard "Rick" Leslie Earl Martyn

After a hard-fought battle Rick was finally at peace on Sunday evening, February 11, 2024.

Rick was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan to Peggy and Mel Martyn and he went into the ‘family business’ of working for CN right out of high school. He even remembered the exact day-September 7/1973. He started as a laborer in the shops and ended his time there as a Train Clerk with multiple roles in between. 

When he retired in November of 2008 it was because he was diagnosed with throat cancer, and it changed his life forever. From that moment until his death, he fought its devastating and lasting side effects. He was a very very tough man as well as stubborn, sometimes ‘crabby’ and quite funny. He was also a proud dog and cat ‘Dad’ over the years, lastly with Jackson AKA Demon Dog, a Pug/Maltese cross who definitely lived up to the nickname. 

He enjoyed playing slow-pitch, riding motorcycles, watching the Oilers and Blue Jays win, and spending time at the lake. He was an excellent cook and he made plenty of big meals for friends and family even though he could never partake. He was very selfless and generous that way. 

He was predeceased by his parents Mel and Peggy, his brother-in-law Allan, his brother Doug, and his nephew Wade. He is survived by his sister Diane, his niece Christine and her husband Tim and son Cole, his special cousin Debbie, and many close family members and friends. 

As per his wishes there will not be a service. If you would like to honor him somehow, you could eat a great meal, possibly pizza-his favorite, and relish it like he would have loved to. Or raise a glass in his honor, possibly a hearty dose of baileys-also his favorite. 

And to the wonderful ICU staff at St Paul’s hospital-the nurses and doctors he spent his last days with -a huge THANK YOU! You were very caring in his greatest time of need.
