BROWN, Dr. William Grant

March 15, 1934- August 26, 2023

It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Bill, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

He is survived by Marion, his beloved wife of 63 years, daughter Nancy (Doug) Russell, granddaughters Lauren, Jessica and Sara, all of Saskatoon, brother Bob of Courtenay, as well as several cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws.   He was predeceased by his parents Harry and Blanche Brown, his sisters Claire and Shirley, his brother-in-law Mike and sister-in-law Maureen.

Bill grew up in Regina, the oldest of four children, attending Albert School and Scott Collegiate. He excelled at school and baseball. He planned to take Chemical Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan upon graduation, however his father had other plans for his eldest son. He wanted him to be a doctor and enrolled him at Queens, a prestigious medical school in Kingston, Ontario.  Eighteen year old Bill left Saskatchewan alone on a three day train ride to a province he had never been to attend university. It was the best choice in hindsight and he spoke fondly of the program and his classmates from Meds ‘58.

During this time, he met a young nursing student, Marion Hyland, who would become the love of his life. They were married in 1960.  Bill went on to complete his fellowship in Radiology in 1963 in Montreal.  He became the youngest Fellow in Radiology in Western Canada. After their daughter Nancy was born in Montreal, they moved to Regina where Bill joined his colleagues in starting Regina Radiology Associates. He then worked at the Grey Nuns/Pasqua Hospital for 13 years before moving to the Plains Health Centre where he was Head of the Radiology Department for 20 years. He was on the council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan for 5 years and the president in 1974.   Bill was proud to be the first interventional radiologist in Regina.

Bill had a dry sense of humour, a quick wit, and a terrific personality that drew friends and family to him. He also had a passion for cars. After retirement, he and Marion spent their winters in Scottsdale at their home in Terravita, making many new friends in the golfing community. They also enjoyed their membership at the Wascana Golf Club in Regina for many years and shared wonderful times with friends.  Bill and Marion lived in Regina until a year ago when they moved to Saskatoon to be closer to Nancy and her family. He was very proud of his three granddaughters and loved spending time with them and their dog Lucy.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Stonebridge Crossing, especially Maureen and Karen, and Dr. Nayar, for their excellent care and compassion.

Flowers are gratefully declined. For those wishing to honour Bill’s memory,  a donation to the Salvation Army or your local food bank would be appreciated.

We will miss his sense of humour and his love in our lives.  A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.

Martens Warman Funeral Home is honoured to be entrusted with the care and arrangements of Dr. William Brown.
